Diagnostic Medical Sonography Certificate Program

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Certificate Program at HSIR is designed to prepare students with associate or bachelor's degrees for employment as diagnostic medical sonographers by developing the working knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to perform diagnostic imaging procedures with ultrasound. Students will learn to use high frequency sound (ultrasound) waves to produce dynamic images of tissues, organs, and blood flow inside the body. Diagnostic Medical Sonographers work closely with physicians (radiologists), who specialize in interpreting medical images to diagnose diseases or injuries. Diagnostic medical sonographers may work in a variety of inpatient and outpatient clinical settings.

Upon completion of the program and one year employment as a graduate of an approved program, the student will be eligible to sit for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification examination.

Applicants are required to:

• High School Graduate or GED
• Minimum of 18 years of age at the time of enrollment
• Meet with an academic advisor
• If internal applicant; must be a full time employed with DHR, minimum 1 year
• Submit a completed non-refundable application fee for admission to the HSIR. The application fee is $100.
• Complete all school and program prerequisites by first day of entry semester
• Submit official transcripts from all institutions in which the student has enrolled
• BLS certification required by first day of entry semester
• Medical malpractice insurance required by first day of entry semester

NOTE: Please follow general admission requirements in addition to specific program requirements.

Student must have completed a two-year allied-health Associate Degree that is patient-care related (Radiologic Technology, Respiratory Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapist Assistant, Registered Nurse, etc.)

Have recieved college level credit (as determined by HSIR) in:

• Algebra, Statistics, or higher mathematics course
• General college-level Physics and/or radiogrpahic physics
• Communications skills
• Human anatomy and physiology
• Medical Terminology

Students must meet and comply with all HSIR clinical standards including immunizations and background check as well as general admission requirements.

The length of time typically required to complete the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Certificate Program is approximately 64 weeks.
